How Child Support is Calculated

Most states use one of these models:

Income Shares Model

Used by most states. Calculates support based on both parents' combined income and the percentage each contributes.

Percentage of Income

Used by some states. Takes a percentage of the non-custodial parent's income based on number of children.

Additional Factors

Courts also consider health insurance, childcare costs, special needs, and time spent with each parent.
